Bloodborne: Beginners' guide

Survive in this twisted world

The new game developed by From Software has instantly become a classic, and a must play game. The creepy atmosphere and the fantastic level design, as well as the clear influence from Dark Souls games, have made Bloodborne a unique experience, but at the same time the game can be so frustrating that you may want to throw your PS4 controller away. Do not give up, take your weapon again and keep exploring the dark and bloody world in an easier way.

For beginners, it is recommended to start with a strength-based character, with a special focus on health over other stats to ensure you're not one-shot killed. Each new level grants an increase of your defense stat, so focus on the level-up of your character early in the game, for a little advantage over the oncoming hordes of enemies. You won’t be able to level up until you obtain your first Insight point, discovering a new area or a boss. Then go back to the Hunter’s Dream and talk to the doll to exchange your Blood Echoes for new levels.

Since the Blood Echoes you obtain are so important for the development of the game during its process, it is recommendable to explore easy farming areas that will grant a high number of Echoes defeating just a couple of enemies. One of the main farming areas that you will discover in the early game is the great bridge where you will find the Cleric Beast. There are two werewolves placed at the right of the entrance of the shortcut from Central Yharnam; attract their attention and enter the house again. Equip a long-range weapon such as the Hunter Axe in its two-hand form, and attack from a safe distance since the lycanthropes cannot enter the house.

The next Bloodborne farming area for advanced levels is to be found in Upper Cathedral Ward. In this area, there are four blue eye werewolves that can be easily defeated following the same strategy as in the previous example. In Mergo’s Loft: Middle, after the Micolash fight, there are powerful enemies, three Eyeball Pigs, which give a high number of Blood Echoes, about 50,000 for each run. Enjoy your free Blood Echoes that will grant you some easy levels.

The weapon you choose will determine your battle style. Hunter Axe will base its strong points on heavy damage, as well as Ludwig’s Holy Blade or the Kirk Hammer. Weapons like Blade of Mercy, Chikage, Tonitrus or Saw Cleaver are based on speed and short-ranged combat rather than in damage. After completing the game with the secret ending, you will have access to the trick weapon Burial Blade, which a blade with a scythe mode. Each one has a unique moveset, so the best option is the weapon with which you feel more comfortable.

Besides the trick weapons, you can equip yourself with firearms in your left hand, very useful for performing additional visceral attacks while your target is stunned. The variety for this kind of equipment includes many things from a flamethrower Flamesprayer to the Hunter Pistol, Hunter Blunderbuss, Ludwig’s Rifle, the Evelyn pistol and a special heavy Cannon. These weapons use quicksilver bullets as ammunition.

All your weapons can be upgraded using Blood Echoes and Blood Stone Shards. For doing this, you have to enter the Workshop of the Hunter’s Dream and fortify them with the materials required. Depending on the level of your equipment, you will need Blood Stone Shards, Twin Blood Stone Shards, Blood Stone Chunks or the limited Blood Rock. Enhancing your trick weapons will open an option for inserting Blood Gems, enhancing the stats of the weapon and even applying fire, bolt, poison or arcane damage.
